American Ballads and Folk Songs
So they saddles up and they hits a lope,
Fer it wa'n't no sight of a ride, And them was the days that a good cow-punch'
Could ile up his inside.
They started her in at the Kentucky Bar
At the head of Whisky Row And ends her up at the Depot House,
Some forty drinks below.
They sets her up and they turns around
And goes her the other wayj An' to tell the God-forsaken truth
Them boys got tight that day.
When they were on their way to camp
A-packin' a pretty good load, Who should they meet but the Devil hisself
Come a-prancin' down the road.
Says he, "Ye ornery cowboy skunks,
Ye'd better hunt for your holes, 'Cause I've come up from hell's rim-rock
To gather in your souls."
Says Buster Jiggs: "The Devil be damned!
We boys are feelin' kinda tight, But you don't gather any cowboy souls
Unless you want a fight."
So he punches a hole in his old cigo And he throws her straight and true
An' he loops it over the Devil's horns An' he takes his dallies true.
